Stones... ok, stones... but there are so many different stones, can any stone become a piece of jewelry? Let's see:
All stones are minerals.
But not every stone/mineral may be refered to as a gemstone. Wikipedia describes a gemstone (also called a gem, fine gem, jewel, precious stone, or semi-precious stone) as a piece of mineral crystal which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments.[1][2][3]
So pieces of jewelry are made with gemstones (in most cases, but of course you can find a stone on a beach and make a pendant and that also will be a piece of jewelry - unique and beautiful!)
If we keep digging deeper (you see: a geology term 😎, yeah, we know some science 🤓), gemstones can be either:
1) precious (in most countries there are 4 of them diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald)
2) or semiprecious (all other gemstones).
Here the stones are classified by their color, translucency (ability to allow light go through the stone) and hardness.
Although the use of the word 'precious' in this classification in a commercial context is, arguably, misleading in that it deceptively implies certain stones are intrinsically more valuable than others, which is not always the case.
If we think about the way stones were created they can be:
1) Natural - grown in nature and by nature, so to say "wild" stones (if you know what I mean 😉) - "a diamond in the rough", for example.
2) Cultured - made by nature but with the help of people, so to say "domesticated" stones (people help nature to produce better stones and in bigger quantities) - a good example is cultured pearls
3) Lab-created - made in labs by people, who try to create similar to natural conditions for them to grow (the lab-grown crystals are identical to those mined in nature, but often have fewer "flaws" (so to say natural design and uniqueness) and cost less - you ask why? - 👍, good question, we'll answer it next time)
And there are also gems imitations, but we prefer jewelry with gems, which are created in the 3 above-mentioned ways.
We believe that those are the most living ways to create gemstones - every stone comes unique and finds its love with a unique person. And then they live happily ever after. And every person makes their jewerly (and stones or gems) a living thing. When jewelry piece finds its perfect person it becomes a part of their life, it collects warm memories, keeps them, and sometimes even passes them to further generations. For us, yes, definitely every stone and jewelry piece is living and powerful in that way.
